What to do if you encounter a bear

With frequent Black Bear sightings in the Kingsmount-Bell Park area, here are a few tips from a recent Ministry of Natural Resources Bear Safety workshop.

Female Black Bear at Winchester and Hyland, May 29, 2005

Remain calm. Do not run away. Do not try to get closer.

If the bear hasn’t seen you or doesn’t seem interested:

-Back away quietly and leave the area.

If the bear sees you and is watching you:

-Slowly back away and talk to the bear in a quiet monotone voice.

-From a safe vantage point (car/house) yell at the bear to leave the area.

If the bear approaches you and will not leave:

-Yell aggressively, wave your arms at the bear and make yourself look bigger.

-If in a group, stand together.

-Challenge the bear, throw objects, blow a whistle or air horn.
